Randolph’s first job out of college in 1981 was at Cherry Lane Music Company in New York, where he taught himself direct mail and marketing techniques while running the company’s small mail-order operation. 

He later co-founded the U.S. edition of MacWorld magazine and the computer mail-order businesses MacWarehouse and MicroWarehouse.In the late 1980s, Randolph spent time building direct-to-consumer marketing operations at software company Borland International. 

He then had short stints at various Silicon Valley startups in the 1990s, including heading marketing at desktop scanner maker Visioneer and being part of the founding team of software testing company Integrity QA.

Netflix Co-Founder and CEO

In 1996, Randolph was working at software debugging company Pure Atria when it was acquired by Rational Software in a major Silicon Valley merger. 

During the commute with Pure Atria founder Reed Hastings, the idea for Netflix was born. Randolph co-founded Netflix with Hastings in 1997 and served as its first CEO until 1999. 

He ceded the CEO role to Hastings but remained on the team, testing concepts like a movie rental kiosk called Netflix Express.

Later Career

After leaving Netflix, Randolph served on the boards of several companies including Looker Data Sciences and Chubbies Shorts. 

He is currently the chairman of the board of trustees of the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) and a board member of the environmental group 1% for the Planet.
